What to do if you have too many tags

Learn why having too many product tags can hide filter options and how to remove unwanted tags using Bulk Edit Tags.

Written by Chris Durkan

The Filter Menu uses product tags to generate the filters on your storefront. Shopify makes a maximum of 1,000 unique tags available per collection page, so collections with more than this may have some filter options missing.

You can reduce your tag count by removing tags you no longer need using our free Bulk Edit Tags app.

  1. Open Bulk Edit Tags and click the "Download all tags" button. This downloads a CSV file containing all unique product tags in your store, sorted alphabetically.

  2. Keep the original file and make a copy to edit.

  3. Open the copy in a spreadsheet. Remove the rows containing tags you want to keep, leaving only the tags you want to delete.

  4. Copy the remaining tags and paste them into the Bulk delete tags section, with one tag per line.

  5. Check the list carefully, then click Delete Tags. The app will queue a job to remove those tags from every product that has them.

Only delete tags you no longer need. Keep tags used by the filters, automated collections, or other apps.
