How to undo product tag changes with Revert Tags

Written by Chris Durkan

If a tagging update didn’t give you the result you expected, Revert Tags can restore earlier product tags using the app’s saved tag history.

It’s useful if you accidentally added, removed or replaced tags, applied a bulk edit to the wrong products, or want to undo recent tagging changes.

How it works

When you choose a point in the job list, the app looks for recorded product tag changes between that job’s creation time and the moment you confirm the revert.

For each affected product, it restores the complete tag list saved before the first recorded change in that period. Products without recorded tag changes in that period are left alone.

Reverting can undo multiple tagging jobs. It isn’t limited to the job on the row you select: later recorded tag changes are included too.

For example, if one job removed tags and a later job added replacement tags, reverting from before those changes restores the affected products’ earlier tag lists.

How to revert tags

  1. Open the app’s dashboard and find the job list.

  2. Find the point you want to revert from, checking the job description and creation time.

  3. Click the revert arrow beside that row.

  4. Read the confirmation message, then select Revert Tags.

  5. A Revert Tag Job is queued. Wait for it to complete, then check the affected products in Shopify.

The revert control is available in the dashboard’s full job list, rather than the job-status pop-up. It is disabled on the newest row.

What to check before reverting

  • Later tag edits can be overwritten. The app restores each affected product’s whole saved tag list. That can remove tags you added manually or through another app after the saved version, or bring back tags you subsequently removed.

  • Tag history is temporary. Saved tag history is configured to expire after 14 days. Reverting depends on the history still available, so an older job appearing in the list does not guarantee its tags can be fully restored.

  • Reverting does not disable tagging rules or automatic updates. If a rule caused the unwanted changes, adjust or disable it before reverting so a future update does not apply them again.

  • Avoid overlapping changes. Let relevant tagging jobs finish and avoid editing tags while the revert is queued or running.

What Revert Tags cannot restore

Revert Tags restores product tags only. It cannot:

  • Bring back deleted collections or deleted products.

  • Undo collection creation, collection rule changes or collection sorting.

  • Restore prices, product descriptions, metafields, theme changes or app settings.

  • Recover tag changes for which the app has no saved history.

If an operation deleted collections and also removed product tags, reverting may restore the recorded tags, but the deleted collections will remain deleted.
